Fiber Twist Demonstrations Schedule

NOTE: All demos will be held at the indoor Vendors' Marketplace.

This page, listings, and information are subject to change without notice.

Demos in the Main Room:

10:00-11:30 a.m., 1:00-3:00 p.m.: Spinning Wool on the Great Wheel
Presenter: Laura Morabito

Laura Morabito will present a working demonstration of the "great wheel" -- also called the walking or wool wheel. It's different than a "regular" spinning wheel which is used by sitting down and pushing a foot pedal to turn the wheel. The great wheel Laura uses is almost five feet tall, and she stands up to use it, walking back and forth, turning the wheel with one hand and drawing out the wool fibers with the other.

10:00 a.m.: Heirloom Rugs
Presenter: Rose Ann Hunter
Website: www.roseannhunter.com

Rose Ann Hunter has been a fiber artist for the last thirty years, and was chosen in 2005 as Craft Person in Residence at Old Sturbridge Village in Traditional Rug Making, c.1790 to 1850. She has adapted and developed over thirty techniques from historic patterns that are sewn, knitted or crocheted folk art rugs.

Rose Ann will demonstrate knitted rugs which are coiled, corded, starbursts, ovals, and heart-shaped. Also included will be the Shaker confetti rug. To view examples, go to www.roseannhunter.com.

11:00 a.m.: Just for Kids: Beginning Spinning on a CD Spindle
Presenter: Jenny Atkins of Twisted Mysteries

Try your hand at spinning. Start by learning about wool and how it turns into yarn. We will make our first bit of yarn using just our fingers, then we will move on to use a twisted stick, and finally to a real drop spindle made from a CD. For a $1 materials fee, you will be able to keep your drop spindle and a bit of wool to practice at home.

12:00 p.m.: Spindles Through Time
Presenter: Marcy Moffet

Marcy will demonstrate spinning with drop spindles, support spindles, hand spindles, and a rock. She will have old and new spindles and antique spindle whorls on display, as well as an array of antique postcards of spindlers.

Marcy Moffet lives in Hadley and has been spinning for fourteen years. She is passionate about spindles and their connection to human history. As well as collecting spindles and spinning wheels, she collects antique photos and postcards of spinners, knitters, sheep and shepherds, many of which she shares on her blog, Habetrot.

1:00 p.m.: No-Fear Dyeing
Presenter: Gail Callahan, The Kangaroo Dyer

This demonstration will show how simple it is to create your own colors on your fiber. Using two types of dye, Gail will apply color to yarn and process it right before your eyes. Learn to overcome any fear of dyeing!

2:00 p.m.: Plastic, The Reusable Eco-Fiber
Presenter: Lou of Lou's Upcycles

Lou has been spending the past year spreading the word about plarn, the plastic yarn. Although this process of using plastic bags for weaving, crocheted and knitting has been around for quite some time, Lou's demonstration shows there is more to make than just rugs and bags. Come and learn how to prepare plastic for use as well as trying your hand at creating your own plastic reusable crafts.

3:00 p.m.: So You Bought a Fleece. Now What?!!!
Presenter: Diane H K, Sweetfern Farm

Buying your first fleece is exciting! Visions of transforming it into warm, soft wearables danced through your head as you selected the fleece. But once you've got that bag of raw and pungent wool home, what do you do with it? This discussion and demo takes the mystery out of turning raw fleece into yarn, by hand, and offers tips on how to do the entire process yourself without spending a fortune.

Demos in the Front Hallway (ATHA):

9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.: Rug Hooking Demos
Presenter: Various

Featured styles of rug hooking will be:

  • Rug hooking with wool fabric strips
  • Miniature punch needle
